The Problem: The Hul’itun Health Society provides holistic health services to two First Nations in the Chemainus region of central Vancouver Island. Like so many organizations around the world, Hul’itun Health Society was challenged to continue operating during the global COVID-19 pandemic, beginning in March 2020. At a time when health services were direly needed, staff found that their ability to work remotely was hampered by slow network speeds and unreliable connectivity. After receiving an inflated, high-pressure quote from their current technology provider for a server upgrade that was meant to alleviate their woes, Hul’itun Health Society administration carried out essential due diligence and sought a competing quote to ensure they were receiving good value.

Instead of providing an off-the-shelf quote in line with the one they had already received, Tekmoto experts performed a complete site assessment, encompassing everything from end user access points, to servers, to networks and more.

The Solution: The findings from our assessment were revelatory. In contradiction to the recommendation from their current technology provider, we found that the health society’s servers were more than adequate to meet their needs now and into the future; replacing it would have been costly and unnecessary. The true issues were related to infrastructure: out-of-date networking equipment and slow internet connections from their internet service provider, two extremely important factors for efficient remote work.

After being retained by Hul’itun Health Society to rectify their network difficulties, step one was to move their internet service under the Tekmoto umbrella, allowing them to get online with enterprise speed at wholesale rates. Next, we performed a complete overhaul of their existing network infrastructure, including new network switches, firewalls, backup batteries, racking, and wireless access points. In addition to hardware infrastructure upgrades, we brought the software on their existing server up to date and migrated their outdated on-premise mail server to Microsoft 365 to improve reliability. At the same time, we added in remote connectivity via virtual private network (VPN) so that workers accessing sensitive information from outside the office can rest assured that their connection is secure. Lastly, we deployed a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system, removing their aging Nortel system that was costing them a fortune in maintenance and time, replacing it with new technology that served their new operational paradigm better, at a lower cost.

Thanks to the industriousness, commitment, and technological prowess of the whole Tekmoto team, we were able to complete this extensive upgrade in just a single weekend, significantly limiting downtime for this essential health service. Now Hul’itun Health Society staff can work seamlessly from the office, at home, or from their mobile devices, enjoying exceptionally reliable connectivity, lightning-fast data transfer, and airtight security, all at a reduced cost.
